Bird of Paradise Care Made Easy 😊
Water your Bird of Paradise when the top 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) of soil feels dry.
Use the finger test: insert your finger into the soil —if it feels dry at that depth, it’s time to water.
During the growing season (October to May, watering is usually needed once
a week. In fall and winter, reduce to every 10–14 days.
Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Always use a pot with good
drainage and let excess water escape completely.
Bird of Paradise needs bright, indirect
light to thrive.
Ideal: Near a south- or west-facing window with filtered, but as much light aspossible.
Tolerates: A few hours of direct morning sunlight.
Avoid:
Low-light spaces, which result in leggy growth and fewer leaves.
Tip: Rotate the plant occasionally so it grows evenly on all sides.
Feed your Bird of Paradise every month
during the growing season (October to May) using a balanced liquid fertilizer, diluted to half strength.
Skip feeding during winter when the plant is dormant. Over-fertilizing can cause salt buildup and damage the roots, so it’s better to underfeed than overfeed.
Bird of Paradise - Strelitzia Reginae
Benefits
Bird of Paradise helps improve indoor air quality through its large, broad leaves, which act as natural humidifiers and help trap dust.
Light
Bird of Paradise thrives in bright, indirect light and benefits from a few hours of direct morning or late afternoon sunlight.
Place it near a south- or west-facing window for best results. In lower light, it may survive but will likely grow slower and may not flower.
Rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth.
Water
Water your Bird of Paradise when the top 5–7 cm (2–3 inches) of soil feels dry.
Use the finger test: insert your finger up to the second knuckle—if it feels dry, it’s time to water.
Keep the soil lightly moist during spring and summer, but avoid soggy conditions. In winter, allow the soil to dry out more between waterings.
Always use a pot with good drainage.
Toxicity
Bird of Paradise is mildly toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested.
It can cause stomach upset, drooling, or vomiting, so keep it out of reach of pets and children.
Fertilizer
Bird of Paradise is a heavy feeder during the growing season.
Fertilize every 2–3 weeks from October to May using a balanced liquid fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10 or 20-20-20) at half strength.
Stop fertilizing during fall and winter when growth slows.
Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to salt buildup in the soil.
Additional Tips
- Cleaning: Wipe leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and promote healthy growth.
- Pests: Watch for spider mites, aphids, and scale. Treat early with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when roots become tight. Use a well-draining mix rich in organic matter.
